    Young scientists

The Young Scientist Forum (YSF) of ARCTOS (www.nfh.uit.no/arctos) proposes to become an arena for young scientist working in the High North, where networking, cultural exchange and future collaborations will be given optimal conditions to develop and grow. Creating a meeting point for young scientists working within the High North is an important investment in collaboration and understanding in the region. Exchange of knowledge and perspectives will create synergetic effects throughout the area and prepare the ground for cooperation in the years to come. Sharing such experiences with the public is important to amplify the effect of this scientific and cultural melting pond. Communication of scientific meetings over the borders will involve the public and enhance the general awareness and understanding for the development in the processes taking place in the High North.

Parallel to the Arctic Frontiers Conference and in direct connection with the oral presentations, the Young Scientist Forum and the ARCTOS PhD school will organise an international workshop for PhD students that is open for all students interested in the pan-Arctic region. The title is: ”Arctic marine ecosystems in an era of rapid climate change”.

This is an approved PhD level course (BIO-8502) at the University of Tromsø, and consists of the conference itself, plus an intensive 5 days seminar including scientific lectures on Arctic marine ecosystems in an era of rapid climate change. The workshop takes place in Tromsø, at the coastal steamer “Hurtigruten” and on the Lofoten Islands.

    General

Living in the High North  24-29 January 2010

Policy section: Sustainable communities in the Arctic 25–26 January 2010

The well-being and health of people living in the High North depends not only on employment opportunities and adequate public services. It also depends on recognition of cultural characteristics, overall political participation and the utilisation of local knowledge in planning and policy development.

The policy section of Arctic Frontiers 2010 will focus on the need for dynamic and adaptive strategies to ensure the sustainability of arctic communities in a changingenvironment.

    Science section: 27–29 January 2010

The scientific section of Arctic Frontiers 2010 includes four parallel sessions:

Session I: Ice and climate, including paleo climate

Variation in ice and snow cover alter the distribution of Earth's heat and water. Evidence of changes brought on by global warming has been documented in both the Arctic and the western Antarctic Peninsula.

Session II: Sustainable communities in the High North; economy, well-being including health issues, and self-governance

To be sustainable, the arctic communities need stablesources of income, probably through a mix of traditionalharvest of natural resources and modern industry andtourism. They also need adequate public services suchas health care, education and food safety. The sustainabilityis often challenged by the regions’ scatteredsettlement and a constant drainage of young people, lack of infrastructure and long distances between communitiesand markets.

Session III: Marine biodiversity under change

This session will examine up-to-date analytical resultson different aspects of arctic marine biodiversity – frommicrobes to mammals and sea ice to sea floor. Resultsfrom relevant science programs and projects along thistheme are presented, with a particular focus on workconducted as part of the Arctic Ocean Diversity projectduring the International Polar Year.

Session IV: Frontiers in E-learning of the High North NEW
